Even though its around us all the time, most people don’t know much about HVAC. How much do you know about the history of HVAC systems?

Although heating and air conditioning may seem boring, there are a lot of interesting facts about it. More so than you have ever imagined!

If you are looking to increase your knowledge about HVAC systems then this article is for you.

What is an HVAC system?

Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning or most commonly known as HVAC is the technology of indoor and vehicular environmental comfort. The main goal of HVAC is to provide thermal comfort and appropriate indoor air quality to residential homes, commercial establishments, and even vehicles of all kind.

HVAC is an important component of homes and establishments because temperature and humidity are being regulated whether it is safe and healthy. One way to assure the quality and the safety of your HVAC system is to undergo regular HVAC inspection.

People might think that there is nothing more you need to know about the HVAC system aside from its mechanics, specifications, and how it works. But, there are some fun facts and information about the HVAC system, that are maybe not necessary, but still important to know and take note in order for you to not take it for granted.

History of Air Conditioning

The first modern air conditioner was invented by Willis Haviland Carrier in 1902. He is a very skilled engineer who experimented with the laws of humidity control in order to solve an application problem at a certain printing plant in Brooklyn, New York.

He borrowed from the concepts of mechanical refrigeration which were long established in the earlier years. What Carrier’s system do is to send air through coils filled with cold water, making the air cool as well, and at the same time, also remove the moisture in order to control the room humidity.

Fast forwards to 1933, the Carrier Air Conditioning Company of America developed air conditioners using a more advanced mechanism. Unlike before, this system uses a belt driven condensing unit, evaporator coil, associated blower, and mechanical controls.

This system or device became the model for the growing market of air cooling systems in the United States.

Nowadays, the air conditioners we have still operates on the same fundamental science of Carrier way back in 1933, while also incorporating various advancements like electronic sensors, high tech mechanics and control, vapor compression, efficiency in energy, and diagnostics and controls.

Air conditioning has become more of a necessity than a luxury and has constantly contributed to the lives and the homes of every person in the world.

Interesting Facts About HVAC

Now that you have known the history of air conditioning, let’s increase your information about HVAC by giving you some interesting and fun facts that you might never heard before.

  • The first system of heating ever identified was used by the Romans. They named it the “hypocaustand its main purpose is to send out heat through the floors and walls of rich Roman homes.
  • The first fully air conditioned home was owned by Charles Gilbert Gates in 1913. The three lot mansion was built on Minneapolis, and has several grand features like an entire ballroom, and gold plumbing, to name a few. Another fun fact, Gates died before his house was completed, so he never experienced the comfort of air conditioning that we do now.
  • Air conditioning has become much more affordable and economical over the years. Nowadays, more than 80 percent of American homes have an air conditioning system and has paved ways for innovations in architecture, like making it possible for windowless buildings to exist and etc.
  • The field of medicine is one of the most benefitted aspects of air conditioning. Without the cool temperature an air conditioning system provides in a laboratory, they would not be able to formulate medicines, antidotes, and such.
  • The term “Summer Blockbuster” has more or less something to do with the existence of air conditioning systems way back in the early twentieth century wherein movie theaters were one of the most successful businesses because people gather inside theater and movie boxes not for the film, but for the cool air inside.
